This year’s Emmy award fashions were a mixed bag of prom, black and … sorry, I nodded off there for a minute. Wow. Let’s take a look at some of the hits and misses from this year’s red carpet.
1. Red seemed to be the color of the moment.
In order, we have Giuliana Rancic, Nina Dobrev, Lea Michelle, Sarah Hyland, and Nancy O’Dell. First of all, I just want to feed Giuliana. In general, I feel like there shouldn’t be such an obvious joining of the arm and shoulder. Nina, fine. I like the shape, although there was way too much mermaid this year. Lea – bad prom dress. You’re usually such a red carpet winner. This is awful. Sarah I think knocked it out of the park, given she’s very young, she went kinda sexy with the slit but not over the top. Don’t love the belt, though. Nancy. Just stop. It’s awful and makes you look like you need an extra ticket for your hips.
Kate Winslet, also a typical red carpet winner, went for a basic cap-sleeved t-shirt-looking dress, that is neither flattering nor fashion. It’s very off-the-rack and not her usual standard of old Hollywood glamour.
Sofia Vergara is everywhere right now and she’s probably the only one on that carpet who should be rocking a mermaid. It works for her in a Latina June Russell kind of way and the top is modern and sexy. Love it. Go girl.
2. Red wasn’t the only color fighting for a spot on the carpet:
That’s Anna Torv on the left being choked by a bright blue piece of fabric. Someone please help her. On the far right, Clair Danes is showing us her dress from a galaxy far, far away, like the 80s. In the middle we have Olivia Munn in emerald green Carolina Herrera. I like the dress and the details, just not the color. She looks like a glo-stick.
Katie Holmes went for blue as well, but I have the opposite issue that I have with Olivia. The color is good, but I hate the dress. It makes her look like she has massive hips and the halter front isn’t flattering even on this stick figure. Her husband, not present, has no shoulders, however, so maybe she’s trying to carry that burden for the family.
3. The What Were You Thinking Award Goes To…
Minka Kelly showed up in this HEINOUS mother-of-the-bride situation that I can only assume she wore on a dare.
Gwyneth Paltrow. So, this happened.
Susan Lucci. She’s played Erica Kane so long that she just assumes she’s getting married. But this time she’s being attacked by a mutant caterpillar. Either that or it’s her maid of honor.
4. The Emmy for Most In Need of A Sandwich Goes To..
Kerry Washington. I’d love to see her and Giuliana Rancic get together for lunch and see what happens.
5. Glee Girls
I’ve already mentioned Lea Michelle’s misstep, but it wasn’t all bad.
Except maybe for this. Heather Morris. Don’t love. Color is good, everything else, not good. Too much like feathers or your dress got caught in a shredder. And the Bride of Frankenstein hair doesn’t help.
Naya Rivera pulled off a classy black dress with a body-skimming silhouette that didn’t over-mermaid her shape, but complimented it beautifully. It’s very classic without being boring.
Jenna Ushkowitz. This is similar to a bridesmaid dress I wore in the early 90s. It’s not cute.
While this isn’t Amber Reilly’s best red carpet effort, she chose a shape that’s really flattering for her. I like the rose color of the main part of the dress, but the bedazzled straps are not cute. Consider her choice last year:
Great of Jayma Mays to climb down off her cake and attend this year’s ceremony. Hideous. It’s as though she ran to a second had store on the way to the event and went to the boxes of bridesmaids dresses in the back that they wouldn’t accept and found this one at the bottom, didn’t have time to iron it, and leaped in front of the camera.
5. Heidi Klum
She gets her own category because she’s Heidi Freaking Klum
Here’s Heidi with her favorite fashion accessory, musician-husband Seal and his chest hair. I have to say I really like her look. It’s fun, it’s flirty, it’s fashion. I can imagine it’s also unwieldy and not ideal for getting in and out of a car or sitting, but it looks great on the red carpet.
